CARI Bengaluru sets quality benchmark in Ayush diagnostics

The Clinical Laboratory at the Central Ayurveda Research Institute in Bengaluru has received ISO 15189:2022 accreditation for Biochemistry and Haematology, becoming the first institute under the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences to achieve this distinction.

The recognition signals a significant step in strengthening quality-assured diagnostics within the Ayush ecosystem. For patients, it translates into access to globally benchmarked, reliable test results, which are critical for accurate treatment and improved health outcomes.

The accreditation confirms that the laboratory meets international standards for accuracy, safety and reliability in diagnostic services. It marks the institute’s progression from an entry-level NABL-certified facility to a fully accredited centre of excellence.

The laboratory currently holds NABL accreditation for 50 parameters across Biochemistry and Haematology. It conducts over 1.5 lakh diagnostic tests annually, covering services such as blood glucose, HbA1c, liver and kidney function tests, lipid and thyroid profiles, electrolytes, and complete blood counts.

In 2025–26, the laboratory carried out more than 1.52 lakh investigations, serving over 9,300 patients. The facility is equipped with advanced systems and digital reporting tools, enabling faster turnaround times and access to reports through SMS, email and WhatsApp.

Institutional growth has paralleled this expansion. Outpatient footfall has risen from 18,918 in 2021 to over 51,300 in 2026, while laboratory investigations have increased from 2,770 to more than 1.55 lakh over the same period. Panchakarma and para-surgical procedures have expanded nearly twentyfold, and research activity has remained steady with 20 to 25 projects annually. Since the introduction of inpatient services in July 2024, bed occupancy has reached near full capacity.

The laboratory’s journey began with a semi-automated biochemistry analyser and progressed to fully automated systems under the Ministry of Ayush’s Centre of Excellence Scheme. Following NABL entry-level certification in November 2022, the institute advanced to meet the more stringent ISO standards through rigorous quality processes.

Minister of State for Ayush Prataprao Jadhav said accreditation to international standards ensures precise and reliable diagnostics, which are essential for effective treatment. He noted that the milestone reflects the Ministry’s efforts to position Ayush infrastructure as a benchmark for quality and reliability.

Ayush Secretary Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha described the achievement as a landmark in integrating high-quality diagnostics with traditional systems of medicine, reinforcing a focus on evidence-based practice, research and patient-centric care.

Prof. Rabinarayan Acharya, Director General of CCRAS, said the accreditation, alongside earlier NABH and NABL certifications and ongoing ISO progression, elevates Ayurveda research and innovation to higher scientific standards.

Dr. Sulochana Bhat, Head of CARI Bengaluru, said the milestone reflects the institute’s commitment to delivering reliable and patient-centred diagnostic services, strengthening its clinical and research capabilities.

With plans to expand its range of accredited tests and enhance diagnostic capacity, CARI Bengaluru is positioning itself to deliver more comprehensive and accessible healthcare. The accreditation underscores a broader shift towards standardised, evidence-driven practices within the Ayush system.
